Let the Games of the 2006 Lawn Mowing Olmpiad Begin

It's finally spring. The trees are budding. Yards are green again. And, because the grass has grown all of 2mm since the snow melted, our next door neighbor is-- even as I type-- mowing her lawn for the first time in 2006. This is a red-letter day for those of us who live on either side of her, as it marks the official start of the yearly lawn mowing games. The woman is obsessed with having short grass ("short" meaning relative to the grass in the other yards on the block). She mows. That is our cue to mow, which we will get around to in a day or two. Then our grass will be shorter than her grass, so she will have to mow again. The game is to get her to mow as often as possible. It works best if we and the other neighbors stagger our mowing so she has to mow again to be shorter than ours and then yet again to be shorter than theirs. The real prize, though, is when she mows, say on Thursday, and then we and the neighbors on the other side mow as late as possible on a Saturday, which leaves her with long grass on Sunday which she can't fix until Monday because it would be unthinkable for her to mow her lawn (even on a riding mower) on the sabbath.
To quote my favorite picture book: "Let the wild rumpus begin!" (Okay, readers, where is that from?)

So it's obvious you havn't just been waiting for comment #20 like our friend Patty.  So in case you're needing inspiration for new material.  I left an old but good idea on her site. Check it out man. And stop the bog strike already.  Please.  Please Please.

jed is the one who mows.  jed is the one who gets dirty stares because our grass is too long.  jed is the one who occassionally burns his hands on the engine, ruins several pairs of socks by dyeing them green, and accidentally clogs the air filter by overfilling the oil.  i'm just jealous because I don't have 20 (now 21) comments on my latest blog.

Not just to bounce the number of comments up to twenty, but I noticed CarolLu's comment again, just as I clicked on "Publish Comment" in response to serf.

We don't live in the suburbs. I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, and (unless God put me back there), the suburbs is the last place I'd want to live right now. We live in an SRT--my own acronym for "Small Rural Town." So small that if you stand at just the right intersection, you can look beyond the town limits and see corn or soybeans growing in the fields. Wait around long enough, and you can actually watch them grow.

That being said, small rural towns are where many farmers choose to retire after they have left their acreage out in the country. And they all cope differently with no longer having crops to plant, cultivate, and harvest.

When we were in Missouri, retired farmers would dig upl the better part of their yard and plant a small truck-farming plot. They grew enough crops to last the winter, and when their pantry was overstocked with vegetables canned from the previous eight years, they would start giving away produce to neighbors like us who didn't have a truck farm in their back yard.

Here in Iowa, the retired farmers tend to put all their horticultural energies into growing grass. They bring in good topsoil, anxiously wait for the first mowing, dutifully spray herbicide on nasty herbal-types, and then mow the grass when it starts to look uneven on top. It's like the guys who have to get a weekly flat-top at the barber. Some retired farmers even install a sprinkler system for the drier portions of the growing season. I have yet to see a mini-pivot system installed (for those of you who know irrigation). The one thing they don't do is bail their grass. I suppose it's because they don't keep livestock needing hay, and their housepets haven't converted to eating silage. Still, they manicure and pamper lawns that would be the envy of some golf courses.

Why don't people in the US learn something from Russians. I've been to Russia five times, and have yet to see a lawn mower. Rather, they tether their goat-cow-horse-whatever in the yard. The next day, they can stake the tether in a different section of the yard. It's self-sustaining. The animals get fed, and provide plenty of fertilizer for the next crop of grass. And one can get fresh milk, too boot. What could be simpler?

In track events, we call this "getting lapped." I suppose it would be like if you go out to mow your lawn and the neighbor starts their mower half an hour after you start, then finishes fifteen minutes before you do. Kinda. The comparison loses something in the actual mowing.

For those look for something original from Carolyn, it would look like:
"All the stuff that has to go into a graduation party," or, "The longest 'to-do' list I've had in a long time."

I"m writing this on behalf of "Brad".  He has a new strategy for winning the mowing olympics.  He calculates the depth of "Mrs. K"s  lawn then makes a pre-emptive strike by mowing our lawn short enough that even if she mows the next day, our lawn will still be shorter.  If you could adopt the same method, he thinks it might send her over the edge.

Can I also say that if the runner on the track is that far behind ....it AINT like he's gonna steam role ya.  Your probably safe strolling across the track if you look both ways first.

Oh my word - we need some new material here G.

Okay - I should probably clarify that I know you guys are reformed (as in not still paying for indulgences and stuff) but I was using it like - you don't bear reformed in the name of your church or anything.

Thank you for allowing me that clarification lest I lead someone astray.

How 'bout when that voice booms from the press box "Please clear the track, please clear the track.  We still have ONE runner left on the track."  Yeah, man - you are THAT runner.  There is however hope for you as you are neither dutch nor reformed per say.

Now that we're one of the last ones in the neighborhood to mow our lawn, will anyone applaud us? kinda like how the last straggling runner at a cross country meet will get applause from everyone who's thinking, "FINALLY, we can get on with the next event. Hurrah!"

The cheer I'm offering over at our friend pcakes goes for you too. I'm feeling blog neglect having so few blogs posted on your site (makes one wonder what other blog sites you've been cheating with)

'Rett - I think the proper approach to the throne of grace for such an offense would be to begin repentence while still in the midst of said sin, but not too early on in the process, the timing must be perfect - allowing one to conclude sinful activity so as to still secure the "good deal".

The question one must ask is "Do I ENJOY mowing my lawn."  Not to be confused by "Do I enjoy WATCHING someone else mow my lawn."

The serf was wondering about Fotomamma's dilemia.  Is grace big enough to cover one on Sunday during the mowing if one remembers to repent first thing Monday morning?

Okay here's a good one I heard once upon a time.  How do you get a hollander (not so affectionate term for dutch reformed in our little non burb) in a pickle?

Offer to mow his grass for free on Sunday.

I love it.

I feel as though I can say that because I am one. It's like redneck jokes - they're really only funny when told by their own kind.

However, I realized I've alienated our blog friends as they probably don't know why that's funny. So I'm sorry to ya'll - you'll just have to trust me - if you lived here - you'd laugh.

I think I knew that, but it reminds me of the burbs - which is all there is left of small town America in these-here parts.  Gotta love small town entertainment (having grown up in a small town I'm sure it's safe to say there's a lot not to love too).

I don't live in the "burbs." Lawn mowing entertainment is strictly small town (pop. 1400) entertainment for us, as we don't have a movie theatre, mall, or skating rink of our own.
